L’ispirazione dell’opera arriva da un dono inaspettato, e insieme una responsabilità:
ricevo delle fotografie scattate da mio nonno materno, Saverio, durante la guerra di colonizzazione italiana in Africa. Non posso distogliere occhi e pensiero. Niente di più tragicamente attuale della guerra, penso, niente di più pericoloso che dimenticare, circoscrivere ogni guerra come un mondo a sé. Vedo invece la traccia indelebile di quegli atti che continua, supera il confine dei corpi e del tempo.
The inspiration for the work comes from an unexpected gift, and at the same time a responsibility:
I receive photographs taken by my maternal grandfather, Saverio, during the Italian colonization war in Africa. I cannot avert my eyes and thoughts. Nothing more tragically relevant than war, I think, nothing more dangerous than forgetting, circumscribing each war as a world unto itself. Instead, I see the indelible trace of those acts that continues across the boundary of bodies and time.
Queste immagini vive, non appartengono al passato e non appartengono solo a me.
These living images, they do not belong to the past and they do not belong only to me.
Si apre così uno spazio di dialogo tra le fotografie antiche e quelle da me scattate, nascono domande. Come ha potuto accettare tutto questo? Ha davvero creduto alla guerra, al fascismo? Come facciamo io a sopportare nel tempo presente ancora l’orrore?
This situation opens up a space for dialogue between the old photographs and the ones I took, questions arise. How could you accept this? Did he really believe in the war, in fascism? How can I in the present time still bear the horror?
